How a roof insurance claim runs in Texas, what documentation it needs, and where a public adjuster fits in.
Insurance claims
If you believe a storm damaged your property, contact your insurer promptly. Ask about reporting and mitigation duties, then arrange the roof inspection and keep the records as they become available. A roofer’s appointment should not delay that first conversation.
The roofer assesses the condition and estimates roofing work. Your insurer applies the policy to the claim. In Texas, a contractor doing or potentially doing the work cannot also act as your public adjuster for that property.
Texas prohibits contractors from waiving, rebating or absorbing your property-policy deductible. See the Texas Department of Insurance explanation.

The inspection and insurance process can move alongside each other.
One
Contact your insurer promptly and ask about deadlines and steps to prevent further damage.
Two
Confirm the wind/hail deductible, valuation basis and any coverage limits or exclusions.
Three
Our roofer can inspect the condition and discuss the work. Confirm separately any particular report you need.
Four
Save safe photos, estimates, temporary-repair receipts and insurer correspondence.
Five
Ask the insurer about coverage differences and the roofer about roofing details. Keep any request for reconsideration tied to the relevant evidence.
Who does what
Three roles that get confused constantly, and confusing them is where claims go wrong.
| The roofing contractor | The carrier's adjuster | A public adjuster | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role | Assess and perform roofing work | Assess the claim for the insurer | Represent the policyholder under an agreement |
| Claim handling | Cannot also act as your public adjuster on property where they do or may do the work | Applies the insurer’s claim process | Requires appropriate Texas licensing and eligibility |
| Roof information | Condition and a proposed work scope | Claim findings and coverage communication | Evidence and coverage issues within their role |
| Cost | Agree the work and any formal report scope | Part of the insurer’s claim process | Read fees and contract terms before hiring |
Before you file
Collect what is safe and available. A homeowner does not need to walk the roof or count impacts.
Interior damage and ground-level changes, with dates when known.
Findings and any documents included in the agreed inspection scope.
Record what you remember without inventing an exact event match.
Enough detail to understand materials, work and pricing.
Keep the cost and description of steps taken to prevent further damage.
Claim number, deadlines, estimates and any written coverage explanation.
Ask the insurer to explain any part of its estimate or decision you do not understand.
Claim questions
Including the ones people are reluctant to ask.
Ask your insurer or agent about your policy and underwriting rules. Do not assume a roof claim has no effect or use a generic prediction for your premium.
Actual cash value accounts for depreciation. Replacement-cost coverage may allow additional payment under its terms after required work, subject to deductible, limits and conditions. Read the roof-specific wording and ask the insurer how payment works on your claim.
Ask for the reason in writing and compare it with the policy and available evidence. Your insurer can explain reconsideration or dispute options; TDI provides consumer help. A roof estimate alone does not determine coverage.
The roofer can provide roofing information and a work estimate. Texas prohibits a contractor from also acting as your public adjuster on a property where they do or may do the work, even if licensed as an adjuster. Ask coverage and negotiation questions through the appropriate claim role.
It is a request for the insurer to reconsider or add claim items, supported by relevant information. An omitted roofing detail does not automatically become covered; the insurer still applies the policy.
