Warranties

Read who covers what on the roof you are buying.

Manufacturer and contractor coverage answer different questions, but they do not always divide neatly into material versus labor. Some manufacturer programs also cover installation or workmanship when their eligibility conditions are met.

The useful document is the coverage offered with your actual roof. Read the product, term, exclusions, claim procedure and any registration or maintenance requirements. Then ask how any contractor workmanship terms fit alongside it.

This guide explains the comparison. It does not establish that a particular warranty or certification is offered by our roofers.

The two promises

How the two kinds of coverage work

Use the terms themselves rather than assume every policy in a category works the same way.

How the two kinds of coverage work
Manufacturer warrantyContractor workmanship warranty
Who answers the claim? The named manufacturer or program administratorThe named contractor or warranty provider
What is covered?Product defects and any eligible additional labor or workmanship coverageThe installation work described in the agreement
How does it change over time?Full-coverage periods can give way to prorated benefits or other limitsThe agreement sets the term and continuing conditions
What is excluded?Exclusions distinguish covered defects from other causes of damageWeather, later alterations or other work can fall outside the installation promise
What must the owner do?Registration, claim notice and maintenance requirements belong to the actual programThe contract sets the notice and service procedures

Where cover runs out

Six questions to ask before you sign

Six questions, and the answers belong on the estimate.

  • How long is the workmanship warranty?

Ask for the number of years and the repairs it covers, written into the agreement.

  • What damage is excluded?

Read the exclusions for weather, maintenance and other work on the roof. Ask how a claimed cause of damage will be assessed.

  • Which manufacturer warranty applies?

Get the product name and actual warranty document. A standard product warranty and an enhanced system program can offer different coverage.

  • Does this program require a qualified installer?

Some enhanced programs have installer and component requirements. Verify that this job qualifies before relying on the advertised coverage.

  • How does attic ventilation affect coverage?

It does not automatically void every material warranty. GAF explains that its manufacturing-defect warranty remains in effect, while damage caused by inadequate ventilation is excluded. Read the terms for the actual product and program.

  • Can the warranty transfer to a buyer?

Check whether transfer is allowed, its deadline, any fee and what coverage remains after the transfer.

Get the offered terms in writing so the coverage can be reviewed before the project is agreed.

Warranty questions

When a roof problem becomes a warranty question

The practical version.

Does a roofing warranty cover hail damage?

An impact rating does not itself include hail-damage coverage. The warranty terms determine whether damage from hail is covered or excluded. Storm insurance is a separate question under your policy.

My roof is ten years old and leaking. Am I covered?

The cause, actual coverage and notice requirements determine that. Product failure, installation defects and storm damage may be treated differently. Start by documenting the condition and contacting the appropriate warranty provider promptly.

What is an enhanced or system warranty?

It may extend the products or workmanship covered when the required assembly and installer conditions are met. Compare the actual added coverage and requirements, not just the word enhanced.

Who provides the warranty on my roof?

The proposal should name any manufacturer and contractor coverage offered. Ask for the documents and confirm eligibility before relying on a particular term.

What if the roofer goes out of business?

Read who is responsible for each promise and whether another provider stands behind it. A manufacturer product claim may follow separate terms from contractor workmanship coverage; an enhanced program may have its own conditions.

Talk through the roof work you need

The estimate should say whose warranty, for how long, and what voids it. If it doesn't, that's worth knowing before the work rather than after.
