Metal roofing

Choose the panel and the assembly together.

Metal roofing changes both the appearance of a house and how the roof is detailed. Standing seam conceals the main panel fasteners. Exposed-fastener systems use screws and washers through the panel, which need their own maintenance attention.

The useful comparison is more than the price of a sheet. The panel profile must suit the pitch; trim and flashing must fit the joints; clips and fastening details must allow for temperature movement.

Metal can dent in hail, and some damage can affect seams, finish or water resistance. It is worth distinguishing those outcomes without assuming every dent is harmless.

The material guide compares metal and asphalt without assuming one will always outlast several of the other.

What North Richland Hills metal roofing covers

A different assembly from shingle, and a different skill set to install.

Panel profile and gauge

Specify the actual product, metal thickness and finish. Panel width, support and fabrication also affect appearance and performance.

Concealed attachment

Standing-seam clips or fastening flanges depend on the profile. The complete assembly still needs proper detailing at edges and penetrations.

High-temp underlayment

Metal gets hot in North Texas. The underlayment beneath it has to be rated for that, and any synthetic off the truck won't do.

Seam type

Snap-lock and mechanically seamed profiles have different minimum slopes and assembly requirements. Choose by the manufacturer’s approved use.

Flashing and trim

Ridge, hip, valley, eave and rake trim, all fabricated to the profile instead of adapted from shingle parts.

Thermal movement allowance

Panels expand and contract measurably across a Texas summer, and the detailing has to let them.

Ask for examples of the proposed panel and the details it needs at your roof transitions.

What it costs

Plan the scope and the budget together

JRH Construction’s Q1 2026 DFW installed range for standing seam is $12 to $25 per square foot of roof surface. An example 2,400-square-foot surface gives $28,800 to $60,000. This broad regional band includes ordinary tear-off and is not a quote from our roofers.

Panel choice, finish, valleys and custom trim can change the scope substantially. Compare the actual metal proposal with the same roof priced in architectural shingles.

Compare the cost ranges

Roof geometry

Every valley and penetration introduces details beyond the open panels.

Attachment and finish

Compare the specified system rather than treating all metal panels as interchangeable.

Storm and policy terms

Ask your insurer about impact classification and any cosmetic-damage exclusions before selecting the roof.

Metal questions

Choosing and living with a metal roof

The ones that decide it either way.

Will a metal roof survive Tarrant County hail?

Metal can resist impacts, but hail may dent panels, damage coatings or affect seams and flashings. The actual panel rating and a roof inspection matter more than a promise that every dent is cosmetic.

Is a metal roof loud in rain?

Not the way people expect it to be. A residential standing seam roof sits over decking and underlayment with an insulated attic beneath, which isn't the assembly anyone is picturing. That's bare panels over open purlins on a barn.

Does metal make the house hotter?

Solar reflectance and thermal performance depend on the finish and the whole roof assembly. Some coated panels reflect substantial sunlight, but color alone does not predict your bills. Insulation, air leakage and HVAC also matter.

Can metal go over my existing shingles?

Some approved assemblies allow a recover over a suitable roof. The deck, existing layers, ventilation design and local requirements must be checked. Tear-off allows a fuller look at the wood below; the permit guide explains the local questions.

Will my insurance cost less with a metal roof?

A metal roof can qualify for a discount, but insurers differ and the terms may exclude cosmetic damage. Get the actual premium and coverage terms for the proposed panels. Compare those with the terms for impact-rated shingle as well as the installed prices.
